WHO WE ARE!

Our official name is the Shannon Self Policy Debate Team as a member of the Joe C. and Carole Kerr McClendon Honors College.  Their gift to the policy debate team helps guarantee debate at the University of Oklahoma for a very long time.  Thank you from everyone who has benefited from OU Debate!

OUR MISSION!

Our debate team was founded on the perspective that in order to compete, we must approach competition from a unique and diverse attitude.  We knew we could not compete with the other entrenched elites of college debate playing their game, and with just 2 coaches our first year, we had to be innovative.

We are mostly known as a “Kritical” team because of our desire to be more philosophical than process oriented.  That does not define all of us, and thus makes us diverse.  Many OU Debaters can always be known for their desire to say “One Off” when they stand up on the negative.

We value participation just as much as competition and that is why we are one of the largest policy debate teams in the country.  As the quote says on the front page “Those who have never debated need debate the most”......

Another quote I like to use is that “the Coach is only as good as their worst debater.”

We travel to both NDT and CEDA Tournaments and participate on a Regional and National Circuit.

We like to take pride in having teams that are competitive in all 3 divisions of debate   NOVICE,  JUNIOR VARSITY and OPEN.
